International ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov flew into London for the grand opening of his first British photography exhibition. ContiniArtUK collaborated with luxury jewellery designers Damiani to cohost the launch of Dancing Away, a visual representation of Baryshnikov’s very personal interpretation of dance and performance.
“I take thousands of images, and it takes me a long, long time to select. My eye catches it and my heart stops. This is exactly what I want”, explained Baryshnikov, demonstrating that his artistry involves being both photographer and connoisseur, “I wanted the audience to see, to be able to imagine, the movement before and after, not just the frozen moment.”
The evening began at the ContiniArtUK gallery on Mayfair’s New Bond Street where guests were invited to a private view of Dancing Away with the drinks reception sponsored by 2Castelli and the guest of honour, Mikhail Baryshnikov in attendance.
Other guests included; Kim Cattrall, Bianca Jagger, Stanley Tucci, Silvia Damiani, Martha Fiennes, Suzy Menkes, Nancy Dell’Olio, Ozwald Boateng, Tomas Arana, Hermione Norris, Detmar Blow, Olivia Grant, Patrick Grant, Jude Kelly, Marina Diamandis, Blaise Patrick, Eliza Cummings, Alistair Guy, Sarah Ann Macklin, William Banks Blaney, Noelle Reno, Nicky Haslam, Rosey Chan, Mike Figgis, Camilla Rutherford and Sasha Volkova, Helidon Xhixha, Omar Hassan, Paolo Vegas, Paul Rousso and Gavin Rain.
Celebrations then continued with a champagne reception followed by a sumptuous gala dinner in the Ballroom at The Dorchester Hotel, London. To start, guests dined on black rice with pumpkin and sage, followed by braised lamb and a dessert of Hazlenut fondant.
Mikhail Baryshnikov is one of the most influential and celebrated dancers of our time and through his photography he has been able to immortalise many other dancer’s experiences. By creating an harmonious unity between dance and photography, Baryshnikov encourages his observers to look upon dance in a way they may not usually.

As part of its 90th anniversary celebrations, Damiani showcase some of their most iconic designs at ContiniArtUK’s New Bond Street gallery during the exhibition, including pieces exhibited at the Pitti Palace, Florence and one of a kind piecesthat won the jewellery oscars.
