The story begins just before 1790 at No. 11 St. James’s Street where Harris’s Apothecary set up shop. Over the next fifty years the family established a reputation selling Lavender Water, Classic Cologne and English Flower perfumes to this fashionable quarter of London. One of the proprietors, Henry Harris, was a surgeon, while Daniel Rotely (D. R.) was an early Pharmaceutical Chemist.

For over two centuries thier family business in the centre of men’s Clubland has served the gentry and the court of St. James’s and in 1938 was awarded the warrant as chemists to her Majesty The Queen, later the Queen Mother which was held until her death in 2002. In 2002 they were also appointed as Chemists to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, an honour that was added to in 2012 when we had the Royal Warrant for Her Majesty the Queen bestowed upon them.

Today they continue to offer outstanding levels of service at their traditional Chemists’ shop at 29 St. James’s Street which includes much of the original furniture. They also adapt with the times, however, their fine selection of soaps, shaving creams, aftershaves and colognes, skincare products and much more, continue to appeal to all those who appreciate quality and distinction the world over.

We tried and tested the Wilde and Harte high-end shaving ‘Eltham’ Mach3 Razor. These razors are made using Stainless Steel in Sheffield, the traditional home of British Steel Manufacturing. The impressive weight of the handle, combined with the ease of a Gilette Mach 3 head, makes this a very worthwhile companion to some Harris Soap or Cream! The Eltham features a striking art-deco design which is both aestheticaly impressive and pleasingly tactile.

D. R. Harris Arlington Shaving Cream Tube is the same concentrated cream as in the bowl but in tube form. With a volume of 75g this tube is ideal for travel as it is small enough to go in hand luggage and large enough to last for the lenghtiest of trips. Fragranced with their classic Arlington fragrance; a blend of citrus and fern.

The Arlington cologne, part of their best selling collection, has light citrus notes, mixed with hints of fern to give a lively but subtle scent. The lighter tones would recommend this as an ideal fragrance for daytime, though it is suitable for all occasions.

And all of the above fit perfectly into a Harris Tweed D.R Harris ‘Country’ Wash Bag. Lovingly hand-made using the finest bespoke Harris Tweed; the fabric is woven especially for D.R Harris by Callum MacLean on the Isle of Lewis, in accordance with the Harris Tweed Authority’s regulations.
